Health Care Bill: What I’m Hearing

by Josh at 8:59 pm

I haven’t written about this in a while, and hardly at all since the bill was passed.  People in GBIO were pretty happy when the bill was passed, but there were a few concerns expressed.  I’ve come to understand that one of the main tasks of organizing involves making points simple and easy to remember.  [...]

Health care bill finally released

by Josh at 10:43 pm

It seemed like whenever I posted that a bill was soon to come, there were delays. And, sure enough, when I don’t post anything, the bill actually comes out. It’s really interesting to see how much goes in to drawing up a bill like this one. The process took forever and was [...]

Final Compromise Bill Today… Hopefully

by Josh at 7:50 am

Last I heard, the House/Senate compromise bill is supposed to be released today.  Then we’ll see what’s actually in it.
To follow up on some of the points from my previous post, both Amy Ridenour and Malcolm Gladwell emailed me back.  Amy Ridenour noted that she didn’t know much about what was going on in Massachusetts [...]

New health care bill

by Josh at 3:55 pm

I got an email from the GBIO main office last week about the final health care legislation set to be released by the health care conference committee tomorrow.  The email also said that a memo from Health Care For All would be posted on the GBIO web site this weekend outlining what is believed to [...]

Health care heating up

by Josh at 10:23 pm

It seemed like after we had stopped collecting signatures, that the issue of health care just faded away.  We knew that the House had crafted a bill that was similar in many points to the ballot initiative, but that the senate had not been as receptive.  That was months ago.
A couple weeks ago, the talk [...]

Christians and climate change

by Josh at 8:36 pm

Yesterday, a group called the Evangelical Climate Initiative issued a statement during a press conference which, among other things, called for national CO2 emissions reductions.  One thing is certain, whoever handles PR for this group deserves a raise, because the story got out (Salon, BBC, Christianity Today).
BoingBoing also noted today that Michael Chrichton was recently [...]

“Dog-in-the-manger” squatting

by Josh at 9:12 pm

I came across this BBC article this week (through boingboing) about a plan made by the British government to seize abandoned homes, renovate them, and then lease them out.
This reminded me of something called “dog-in-the-manger” squatting that I found out on a site about distributism (an idea that intrigues me greatly, even if I don’t [...]

Health care reform rally

by Josh at 8:13 pm

This past Tuesday there was a rally and press conference at the State House in Boston held by MassAct. It was announced that 75,000 signatures had been collected for the ballot initiative (30,000 collected by GBIO) and pressure was put on the Massachusetts congress to pass reform themselves. I wasn’t there myself, alas. [...]

Christians and the ethical treatment of detainees

by Josh at 8:46 am

While cruising Planet Emergent this morning, I came across this blog entry that led me to an article in Christianity Today by Gary Haugen of the International Justice Mission. IJM is a Christian organization that works on international human rights cases. I applied for a job as IT manager there a few years [...]

Letter on Jim Wallis

by Josh at 9:51 am

Last Friday, Salon.com ran an article called Getting Religion about Jim Wallis and the Democratic party. Of course, this topic was right up my alley, so I sent them a letter which they published. I thought the article was more than a little too hard on Wallis (which I hope was evident in [...]
