A second look at debt

by Josh at 11:23 pm

Those who don’t follow the comments on this blog should note that Anya Kamenetz posted a comment today defending her book.  (Note:  This is the second time a writer has responded to remarks on her/his work here.)
I’ll admit that I may have gotten the wrong impression of her book and Anya’s comment gives me reason [...]

Generation Debt

by Josh at 11:49 am

Salon published an interview with Generation Debt author Anya Kamenetz today.  Kamenetz is essentially saying the same things that Tamara Draut is saying, though I do appreciate that Kamenetz seems to have a lot more to say about consumerism and its role in driving up debt in America.
Comments on the article make me think that [...]

Not Strapped

by Josh at 1:23 pm

Or why my heart doesn’t bleed for single college grads that make $30,000 a year.
The short answer to that question is because that was me 5 years ago.  Honestly, I blame my own experience for the fact that I have such a visceral negative reaction when I hear about the new book Strapped by Tamara [...]

Beating oil addiction through investment

by Josh at 9:34 am

I’ve been reading up recently on socially conscious investing an this article on two new stock indexes caught my attention.
The article discusses the newly created WilderHill New Energy Global Innovation Index and the Cleantech Index which track companies related to clean energy and clean technology respectively.
The article points out that this sector is currently booming [...]

Notes from an anonymous hotel room

by Susannah at 11:45 pm

I’m feeling a mixture of excitement, relief, melancholy, anxiety covered with a layer of exhaustion and developing cold symptoms.  I’m halfway through my interview weekend at Emory and after a day of almost solid talking to people, I’m happy to be back in my room, relaxing in my pajamas, alone since my roommate isn’t staying [...]

Apparently due to excessive risky behavior among upperclassmen.  All students have been treated and are recovering.

Christians and climate change

by Josh at 8:36 pm

Yesterday, a group called the Evangelical Climate Initiative issued a statement during a press conference which, among other things, called for national CO2 emissions reductions.  One thing is certain, whoever handles PR for this group deserves a raise, because the story got out (Salon, BBC, Christianity Today).
BoingBoing also noted today that Michael Chrichton was recently [...]

How to survive a bad roommate…

by Josh at 10:00 pm

This April, Dark Horse Comics will be publishing the first of a four issue mini-series called ArchEnemies. Back in college, I used to play RPGs with the writer, Drew Melbourne. ArchEnemies is about a superhero and supervillian who are archenemies (go figure) bent on each other’s destruction. In their secret identities and unbeknownst to [...]

Josh shouldn’t…

by Josh at 4:32 pm

Recently, a blog meme was circulating where a person would google “[their name] needs” and write a post to their blog with the top 10 internet phrases containing “so-and-so needs”. For example, I would google “josh needs” and if the no. 1 result were a page that contained “Josh needs a kick in the pants.” [...]

Addicted to Oil…

by Josh at 9:08 am

That was the headline on the front page of the Metro today. And, of course, the President is right, even if he is stating the obvious.
By coincidence (or perhaps by design), this article from the Pure Energy Systems Network came up in my Bloglines today. It’s about a product called the SolarCube that has been [...]
